Main Features of Microprocessor-Based Protection

Research and practice have proven that compared with traditional relay protection, microprocessor-based protection has many advantages. Its main features are as follows:

  a) Improve and enhance the operating characteristics and performance of relay protection, with a high correct operation rate. This is mainly reflected in the ability to obtain characteristics that are not easily achieved with conventional protection; its strong memory enables better implementation of fault component protection; it can introduce automatic control, new mathematical theories and technologies such as adaptive control, state prediction, fuzzy control, and artificial neural networks, and its high operational accuracy has been proven in operational practice.

  b) It is convenient to expand other auxiliary functions. For example, fault recording, waveform analysis, etc., and it can conveniently add functions such as under-frequency load shedding, automatic reclosing, fault recording, and fault location.

  c) Superior process and structural conditions. This is reflected in the relatively universal hardware, easy manufacturing and standardization; small device size, reducing the number of panels; and low power consumption.Arrester counter tester is used to test whether various types of discharge counters operate normally. d) Reliability is easy to improve. This is reflected in the fact that the characteristics of digital components are not easily affected by temperature changes, power supply fluctuations, or service life, and are not easily affected by component replacement; moreover, self-check and inspection capabilities are strong, and software methods can be used to detect the working conditions of main components, parts, and the functional software itself.

    e) Flexible and convenient use, with increasingly friendly human-machine interface. Its maintenance and debugging are also more convenient, thereby shortening maintenance time; at the same time, based on operational experience, the characteristics and structure can be changed through software methods on site.

  f) Remote monitoring is possible. The microprocessor-based protection device has serial communication capability, and the communication with the substation microcomputer monitoring system endows the microprocessor-based protection with remote monitoring characteristics.
