Arc - Response Speed of High Voltage Power Supply After Arc

In the custom product, when the 60kV high voltage power supply output discharges, the arc occurs at 2 divisions to the left of the center scale. The energy stored in the high voltage power supply output is released by the arc until it extinguishes. In this photo, the arc extinguishes at approximately 12kV. Zero kV is the horizontal axis of the oscilloscope.

After the arc extinguishes, the high voltage power supply output is disabled for 20ms, as shown by the delay before the output begins to charge. The output recharge characteristic charges the output very quickly to 25% of the rated current (determined by the power supply's rated current as well as the total output capacitance and load). As shown, from 25% to the rated value, the output increases exponentially with a time constant of 50 milliseconds.

Note that the fast initial rise is the 25% of rated value segment, regardless of the drop distance from which the output initially released. If the output is fully discharged, the fast initial rise would be the full 25%, which in this case is 15kV. However, since the arc extinguishes at 12kV, the fast rise is only 15kV – 12 kV = 3kV, as shown.

If there is arc protection, most of the Wiesemann high voltage power supplies' arc extinguishing will completely reduce the voltage to near 0kV, wait for 2 seconds before attempting to re-raise the voltage, and one cycle takes more than 10 seconds. If you need a high voltage power supply that can quickly recover to the set value, please call Wiesemann High Voltage Power Supply for customization.
